National Sporting Rifle Shoot: Competition Event

The National Sporting Rifle Shoot is a NZDA national shooting event held annually.

The competition has the following events:

• Rimfire
  • 50m
  • 100m
• Centerfire
  • 100m 4x Position
  • 200m 4x Position
• Running boar

Medals are awarded to the top 3 placings in rimfire and centrefire events.

What do you need to compete in the NSRS?

Any NZDA member can participate in this event.

Centerfire

You can start by using your hunting rifle, you will find the smaller or mid size calibers more comfortable to shoot.

Tip: The larger calibers have an advantage in that the shot is scored to the hole seen in the paper so a larger caliber will touch the line and score 'in' where as a small caliber may not touch the line and score 'out'.

Rimfire

Any good .22 will do the job.

Scope

A scope with parallax adjustment will be helpful for accuracy but you will probably shoot best with what you are used to. With experience you may wish to upgrade your optics, trigger etc. Check the rules around modifications.

History of the National Sporting Rifle Competition

In 1986 the first NZDA National Shooting week was run, holding events including rimfire 4 position ,centrefire 4 position with 10 shot running boar, rimfire silhouette, 60 shot 200m centrefire prone, running game target (50 meter rimfire running boar 30 slow 30 fast runs which was an Olympic games event at the time).

This shoot was attended by over 100 NZDA members. Competition was fierce, with rifles, scopes, sleeping bags and many other expensive prizes up for grabs.

After the event a usual 'shooters meeting' was held. Ideas like bringing in the use of slings, shooting jackets, pants boots and all Olympic shooting gear, as well as 10 shots per position were tabled.

These ideas were accepted by the shooters of the time, who were keen to grow the future of the sport.

However over the following years numbers declined and eventually the week became a non even.Why? The shooters of the time got old, they retired and hunters today are seemingly less interested in target shooting.

Today, there is still a place and a need for hunters to practice their skills on the range. It's an NZDA challenge of how you get them there, and off their bipods/bags so they can learn to shoot game standing sitting or kneeling and unsupported- all necessary skills for a bush hunter.

Target shooters advocate that there is a thrill of shooting a good target or winning a top placing among your fellow shooters. But, the reality is that you are competing against yourself as you have no way of affecting another shooters performance, whoever shoots the highest score on the day wins.
